The Challenge

American Berserk was created around an ambitious idea to build an experiential art exhibit unlike anything in New York City. The venture was backed by an art-loving entrepreneur who wanted visitors to experience art rather than simply look at it. The concept would allow artists to guide visitors through their work, turning individual pieces into immersive, living environments.

To make the experiment possible, the space needed to be just as unconventional as the concept itself. American Berserk needed a large, open floor plan with high ceilings that could be transformed into individual worlds for each participating artist. A prominent facade and substantial frontage were also important for creating visibility and marketing the experience. Most importantly, the venture needed a short-term commitment and reasonable rent, giving the new company the opportunity to test the concept before deciding whether a longer-term location made sense.

The Solution

130-132 West 29th Street proved to be an unusually strong match for the project. The building has a history of accommodating unique operators, and its existing layout provided American Berserk with something that would have been difficult and expensive to recreate from scratch.

The space had previously been home to Escape Virtuality, leaving behind a highly unconventional buildout. The ground floor offered the expansive, open environment and tall ceilings needed to create the exhibit, while the second floor featured a maze of existing escape rooms and even a to-scale replica of an NYC subway car.

Rather than viewing the unusual existing conditions as a limitation, American Berserk was able to see the possibilities. The building's existing character provided a foundation for an immersive experience while allowing the artists to transform the space into something entirely their own.

The Outcome

American Berserk was able to turn an unconventional commercial space into an equally unconventional art experience. The combination of a flexible short-term commitment, large open areas, high ceilings, and an existing buildout with plenty of character gave the new venture the opportunity to bring its vision to life without committing to the cost and risk of a traditional long-term lease.

The result was a creative concept matched with a space that was anything but ordinary.
